Mat Whynott

Executive Director

Mat has pretty much done every job at camp from CIT to Summer Camp Director to parent and now Executive Director.

Mat's passion in life is giving kids the opportunity to have fun, get dirty, learn a little about their faith and how to be a good person in life. Along with his duties at camp he is also the Minister of Children, Youth & Families at Hope United Church in Halifax.

"Camp gives kids the opportunity to be themselves, to learn from each other and to listen to each other. There isn't any other place that I have seen where kids get this type of experience."

Sherbrooke Lake Camp grounded him in his faith. Camp gave him the opportunity to become closer with God and with his church.

"For me, camp is church. What better way to experience faith than on the 1000ft beach at camp, or sitting at chapel island or sharing in a laugh in the cabin. For me, that is community and that is church."

In his previous career, he worked in politics in Nova Scotia for 12 years. In fact, at the age of 23 he was elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly as the MLA for Hammonds Plains-Upper Sackville.
